Another tight pitcher’s duel was left up to the bullpen for both teams. The game remained tied through nine and lasted until the 12th, when an error and collapse by Manny Acosta gave the Nationals the win and short sweep with a 3-2 score.

A pitcher’s duel between Tim Redding and Tom Glavine lasted six innings and resulted in a tie at two. The bullpen let Glavine down, giving up four late runs in rout to a Nationals win, 6-3.

After a disappointing series loss to the Mets in New York, the Braves continue their road trip with a two-game stop in Washington against the Nationals. It will be the seventh and eighth time the two teams have faced off and is the final series for the month of April.

John Smoltz’s shoulder had settled down in his previous few starts, but came back with more pain than ever in a season-low four inning start. He gave up four runs and the Braves offense couldn’t make up for it, giving the Mets a second straight win and the series.

If it wasn’t for walks, Jair Jurrjens almost would have had a perfect game. He allowed three early runs on walks but rebounded for another solid start. Kelly Johnson backed him with four RBI’s as the Braves took the first game of the series, 6-3.

The Braves hit the road following a 5-2 homestand in which they swept the Dodgers and split a series with the Nationals and Marlins. They now face the fourth place Mets, and are catching them at a good time.
