This is way too small of a sample size to be statistically meaningful, but it sure is fun! Full Disclosure: I lifted these stats from TalkingChop...

In the 9th inning, Jason Heyward is 3/5 with a BB, 2 HR and a walkoff single. His slash line: .600 AVG / .667 OBP / 1.800 SLG.

With runners on 3rd, Heyward has yet to make an out: 3/3 with 3 BB (2 of those with the bases loaded).

With runners in scoring position, Heyward is 8/11 with a HR, 2 2B, and 4 BB, for a .727 / .800 / 1.182 line. That's 3 outs in 15 PA with RISP.

After a 3-1 count, Heyward has a perfect 1.000 / 1.000 / 4.000 slash line (6 PAs: 5 BB and 1 HR).

After a 2-0 count, Heyward is doing nearly as well: 2/3 with a HR and 7 BB, for a .667 / .900 / 1.667 line. In other words, Heyward has worked ten 2-0 counts and made one out.

When ahead in the count, Heyward's line is .386 / .636 / 1.000.

It will be fascinating to see how pitchers adjust to him over the course of the season, assuming he continues to hit well. As pitchers realize that he really is willing to take pitches out of the strike zone, I think they'll start throwing him more strikes early in the count. That's what I would do - throw the good stuff right away and try to get ahead 0-1, 1-2 and maybe make JH be a little less aggressive.

Of course, if he gets good early pitches, and recognizes it as I am sure he will, he'll pick an area of the plate and if the first pitch is there, he'll crush it. He makes adjustments, and does it pretty quickly, too.

You guys are making it so tough not to say that these situational splits aren't worth much...

But I'm not going to say it.

Go ahead and say it, Dream. Kid, meet NL pitching. Lefty specialists, batting in a lineup filled with paper tigers and playing for a manager who's a threat to get fired in his swan song season! Seriously, Jayward started great but the league is tough.

(New nickname courtesy of Don Sutton who spit out Jayward Heyson, or close to it before correcting himself, last night. I thought it had a nice flow to it and it matches a lot of his team mates bass-ackwards play!)

A guy can dream, can't he? Come on, if they followed his lead to win all those games they're following his lead in not showing up. A lot of the players may be facing swan song seasons if this continues! Besides, I think it would be hilarious and in line with the old Atlanta Braves, before they figured out how to win!

This is one fear I had about bringing in The Kid from the get go. He started well and had done so well, and so much better than 75% of our lineup, that he's gotta be feeling some pressure to produce since no one else is. I just hope that he doesn't start expanding his zone and developing bad habits because he's buried in the lineup. I hope he gets moved up in the lineup with Chipper on the shelf.
