I thought some folks on here might be interested to read this article about Tony Pena Jr.'s attempt to remake himself as a pitcher in the SF Giants' farm system.

RTD Article (http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/sports/minors/minors_baseball/article/SQUR07_20100406-223206/335569/)

"...Pena played shortstop for the Richmond Braves in 2005 and '06. After more than three seasons in the big leagues with Atlanta and Kansas City, he's trying to do something that's not frequently done: make it back to the majors as a pitcher.

Pena, 29, will be a reliever when the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels open their season tomorrow at Bowie...."

I do remember him having a really strong arm. Hope it works out for him.

Don't know if it has been posted here yet, but former 3rd baseman, Van Pope, is making that transition as well.

Yeah, I had not seen this (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100325&content_id=8936768&vkey=news_t431&fext=.jsp&sid=t431).

Pope pitched a perfect eighth inning for Advanced Class A Myrtle Beach on Thursday against Lakeland of the Detroit organization and recorded a strikeout. He threw just three balls out of 11 pitches.

It was the third straight scoreless outing for Pope, who recently turned 26, and he has allowed just one hit.

Pope was amongst the long group of "possible replacements for Chipper" over the year. But he never had the stick to remain a corner infielder.
