View Full Version : The Jason Heyward nickname thread

Since the "Jay-Hey Kid" seems pretty lame, and I'm not sure Hey-WOOD is the answer, either, let's come up with the best nickname for the Braves' budding star. Perhaps we can share the best few with our broadcasters and the AJC so we can avoid listening to something unfortunate all year, and perhaps longer....

So, give it your best shot.

I'll start out with one to grease the skids: Jason Hey-gone.

I'm afraid Jay-Hey is going to be it. It's kind of catchy... but ultimately not one I prefer.

I don't really care much about nicknames, though. Prince Albert may as well be called Fat Albert. When he comes to the plate, though, I know it' Albert Freakin' Pujols up to bat, and I fear what he is going to do against us.

I'll put my thinking cap on for more nicknames...

I'm sticking with Buck Belue's HeyWOOD.

Heyward isn't a long name or anything, sort of like McCann. All the y baby Braves were busts so it's time to be more careful about nicknames. Jay Hey or whatever? Imagine if Hank Aaron had been called Ha or Hahahahaha. That wouldn't have been cool

Gee, wasn't he called Hammerin' Hank? In fact, Hank is actually a nickname for Henry......

But I get the idea about using contractions of first and last names.

His intro music should be the game music from Altered Beast too, and before he bats, the crowd should call out in unison: "Power Up!"

However, we're all too late. This conversation has already been rendered moot.

I guess "The J-Hey Kid" is a bit of an improvement over just "Jay-Hey".

That's a hell of an idea. My wife has a membership to a custom t-shirt making website. I'll try to get her to make some Altered Beast shirts on there, with Power Up on the back. I'll try to post on here when she's done with the prototype. We can beat this Jay Hey thing guys, don't give up.

This can be undone. A chant at the ballpark, or a crowd in the bleachers with matching T-shirts can swing a big bat. Keep 'em coming. We'll know it when we hit it....

DOB might have accidentally come up with a new nickname in a recent tweet (http://twitter.com/ajcbraves/status/10290215604):

Cox said Heywad would be in lineup Thursday night vs. Yankees, "For sure. No problem at all." Chipper and Melky only regs not making trip.

Hee, Heywad.

Hey Hobbes, been busy with work and applying to graduate programs (got into several, and will begin in the fall, probably at Mizzou). I hope to be able to follow the Braves pretty closely this summer. I'm anxious to see how HeyWood and Wags do this year.

I absolutely hate the idea of giving a guy a nickname, let alone an effing T-shirt when he hasn't even had a cup of coffee in the Bigs yet. I wish they would slow down this hype machine. Let the kid prove himself before we anoint him please.

Bear in mind that to old people "Altered Beast" means something completely different. I have an altered beast. He barks at the neighbor kids, poops in my backyard, and drinks from the toilet.

I always thought "Cobra" for Dave Parker was cool. I also liked Greg "The Bull" Luzinski.

Hollywood: Hell no, man. We got our butts kicked.

Hollywood: Yeah, and he's laughing at us, right on the radio, he's laughing at us.

*I understand the pic isn't Hollywood...but I spent 10 minutes looking for a good one and that's 9 minutes too long to look for a pic of a supporting character from an 80's movie.*

How about "The Truth", because of the unreal amount of hype he's gotten.

You know, like, "It's not hype if it's THE TRUTH!". I mean, if he turns out to be as good as he's supposed to be, it would be pretty fitting.

If I get some support on that I will literally go to the game on Tuesday with a sign that encourages people to stop calling him "J-Hey" and start calling him "The Truth". I just hate that nickname so much. :banghead:

I should remind everyone that according to Ron White, some guys sit at home and fondle themselves to Roadhouse. Double-duece doesn't do it for me. It's a pretty unoriginal spin on a number. HeyWood, OTOH, is perfect. It's close to the actual name while being just different enough to be funny, and it is a nod to Major League ("how's your wife and my kids?"). These days it's pretty rare that I disagree starkly with you Dream, but I hope to God that that name doesn't catch on, just as I hope that abominations like JayHey don't catch on.

I agree that Double Deuce is just an unfortunate nickname. It sounds a) like a horribly difficult bowel movement and b) like a nickname some scrawny kid might give themselves in high school.

"Hey guys, from now on, call me Double Deuces- because I went ahead and glued the deuce of hearts and the deuce of clubs on my trapper keeper. Ok? Guys..?"

My curmudgeonly self is going to continue to call him Heyward. I like the idea of one potential star out there not using a nickname.

I like Double Deuce because it makes me think of Strong Bad. "Give him the Double Deuce!" But then, I don't listen to Ron White or any of his "redneck humor" breathern so I guess I wouldn't know if anyone masturbates to Roadhouse.

HeyWood, to me, and other plays on his name seem too easy and, dare I say, unoriginal. But to each his own.

I wonder what Bobby calls him--probably just "kid".

I didn't really think of Roadhouse at all with the Double Deuces. I just like the alliteration, the meter for cheering purposes, and it has a certain cachet.

Jey-Hey is just lame. Sorry the Braves seem to have invested in it. :banghead:

HeyWOOD is okay, I guess. Of course, you could call him HeyBAT.

Jaystick???

I guess you can just call him Ray as long has he continues to perform as advertised!!!

Agree with this. It seems to me that folks try to assign nicknames way too early these days (throughout baseball, not just with Heyward), instead of letting the nicknames evolve naturally. That's probably why we have so many nicknames that are just an abbreviation of the players name, instead of more descriptive nicknames.

Yeah I'm not a fan of double deuce. I don't like J-Hey either but I'd take that over double deuce. I didn't even like typing it. Plus when I look at Heyward I don't think of poop. lol . When I say double deuce I sort of laugh a little and if it caught on their would be signs in the stands with pictures of giant piles of crap lol.
I could call his bats Heymakers but I think I'd rather stick with Heyward for his name.

If Smoltz were a young star these days fans would call him "Kick" and his career would have been finished. Heyward is Heyward until someone comes up with an original cool name, not some weird name combination any person with a random word generator could come up with.

My brother and I share a fantasy baseball team, and Heyward is on it. Every time he hits a home run, we race see who can be the first one to call the other and yell at the top of his lungs "RELEASE THE KRAKEN!" I don't exactly know how that got started, but we don't even use his name anymore. We just call him "The Kraken".

Smoltz wasn't as good a kid pitcher as #22 is as a position player. Heck, we could have called Smoltz "shrinkage" at the beginning. HeyWOOD seems to be a Mickey Mantle sort--ready, no waiting.
