They announced the NL Gold Glove winners today.
C - Molina, STL
1B - Gonzalez, SD
2B - Hudson, LA
3B - Zimmerman, WAS
SS - Rollins, PHI
OF - Bourn, HOU
OF - Victorino, PHI
OF - Kemp, LA
P - Wainwright, STL
Any complaints?
I think it was nice to see Gonzalez win the award since he doesn't get much respect coming out of SD. Zimmerman was amazing this year and definitely deserved the award.

Jeter...bleah. That's undeserved Gold Glove #4.

I agree. There were more deserving shortstops, but his name got him another award.

I hadn't realized that Wainwright was a hotshot fielder. He must have been taking notes during spring training with the Braves or something.
Oh, and I hope D Wright enjoyed his GG. I have a feeling it will be his last.

He's not. Supposedly he was something like 17th out of 20 pitchers in one of the fielding metrics.

Does anyone think Hanson has a legit shot at ROY? I'm anxious for the award to be announced.
Also curious who will win the Cy Young. Everyone on St. Louis radio seems to think it will go to Carpenter. Any chance a non-St. Louis guy will win?

I think Happ will win ROY but I also know which pitcher most teams would rather have in the long run.

Agreed. If the Braves were in the playoffs Hanson would have been starting game 3. Happ was such a good pitcher the Phillies didn't even trust him to make a start during the playoffs.
Happ will win it, but the better pitcher is Hanson hands down.
As far as cy young it will either be Carpenter or Wainwright. That's why I wish it was the Cards who made it to the world series so they could have beat the Yanks.

I just read an interesting article on CNNSI about how Jeter actually did deserve it this year, however Hunter, Jones, and Suzuki all were outplayed by the rookie M's Outfielder who deserved the Gold Glove hands down. I can't remember his name though

Tough year for the Cardinals. They had the league MVP and the Cy Young award winner (I assume) and didn't make it out of the first round. Makes you wonder what is most important in baseball.

Apparently some longshot, Chris Coghlan, took the honor. He posted an .850 OPS in 128 games with just over 504 ABs. He posted a .390 OBP, but hit just 9 dingers. Seems like an odd choice to me. There wasn't much to compare him to as far as other offensive rookies, meanwhile, I would consider the contributions of Happ and Hanson far superior to a freakin' leadoff hitter who stole just 8 bases in 13 attempts. I don't know, he slapped some doubles and got on base, but it just seems to me it's easier for a hitter to be a fluke than a pitcher. Granted, it was a solid rookie campaign, but he seemed to get the vote only because there wasn't really another viable offensive rookie to negate his votes (unlike Happ and Hanson). God, when politics starts to effect who is getting post-season awards, I gotta think they are pretty meaningless.

I don't think he was really a long shot. If he played for a team in the north east we'd all know his name. Boog and Joe were all over Coghlan last year. Apparently he did some things that, compared to rookies of the past, were very impressive. As much as I wanted Hanson to win it, Coghlan was the right choice IMO. I think that if he hadn't won the award, and it had gone to Happ, then you would have a case about politics effecting the awards.

Coghlan may have only hit 9 dingers, but I think 8 of them were against the Braves.
OK, not really, but it seemed like it. He hit .321 in basically a full season (565 plate appearances)... not too shabby. I would have voted Coghlan first, Hanson second, and Happ third.

Hanson drew two first-place votes and was excluded from 15 of the 32 ballots.
To be excluded with the kind of year Hanson had... those guys need their votes revoked. Inning per Inning Hanson was WAY better than Happ. Coglan had a good year and looks like he'll have Jeter type numbers for his career. High average, ok homers, good (not great) speed, etc. We'll see.
I don't care if he won but to be excluded from the list when people are looking at ROY is a JOKE.

Now I'm really getting scared because I was thinking exactly the same thins as bravos4ever. Truth be told I think Hanson deserved it because he just went out there start after start and was quality just about every time.

Are you sure that the RoY curse isn't finishing 3rd? Jeff Francoeur was 3rd in2005 and we all know what a stellar career he's had since then. ;)

It just seems that rarely do ROY winners move on to stellar careers.
well I just went and looked at the list and it appears that may be a myth. There are a lot of guys who never became GREAT players, but a bunch that did. So I may be totally talking out of my azz here....

Yeah, I was proud of the baseball writers for once on that decision. Greinke's win-loss record may no match C.C. Sabathia, but that doesn't mean he wasn't better. In fact, I was pretty pleased to see King Felix and Verlander drop CiCi's to fourth place.
But he did think he had the best season. He said he had spoken with teammate Brian Bannister about his FIP -- a new-age statistic called Fielding Independent Pitching, which is supposed to factor out defensive differences. link (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4663979)

I think Greinke was the best pitcher in the league and wins are more a derivative of the team you are on. Now let's see if Carpenter wins the NL award as he was lights out all year.

Tracy (COL) wins NL Manager of the Year.
Scioscia (LAA) wins AL Manager of the Year.
Bobby Cox finishes 5th in the NL race. LaRussa was second and Torre was third.

Lincecum nabs the NL Cy Young.
I know that most of you guys were expecting either Carpenter or Wainwright to get it, but you can't argue with Lincecum getting the award. The guy was dominant. .206 OBA. That's a great closer number, not a starter number. In an interesting twist, Wainwright got one more first place vote than Lincecum, but finished 3rd.

Here in Arkansas, the Cardinal homerism knows no bounds. This state is about ready to overthrow the government over this Cy Young vote. I am officially placing Cardinal fans at the top of my list of most annoying, narrow-minded, homer fans in the history of the universe. How are things looking up your way, JanShan?

St. Louis' ESPN radio (101.1) has banned Keith Law from their station after having him on to discuss why he would vote for Javier Vazquez over Chris Carpenter. They didn't like his answer that Javy was more important to his team's success so they called him names and refused to have an intelligent conversation with him. To say the least, everyone in St. Louis is beyond angry.
I don't know how you argue with Lincecum at all. His stats are dominant and the award could have gone one of three ways without argument.

One poster was pissing and moaning about Law's vote and remarked that Wainwright was "way better than Vazquez" in 2009. I made this post to show how the win stat was a flawed argument for pitchers, and to point out how JV matched up against Wainwright. I made it a point to say that I was not lobbying for Vazquez to win it because I knew he shouldn't. Just wanted to put his name in the conversation and show how run support hurt his win total and subsequently his Cy Young recognition. Then I asked what his definition of "way better" was. Most of my posts on the subject were later deleted and I was just as civil as I am being right now. Two of the four mods in that section are Card fans. Go figure.

So much for those "knowledgeable" St. Louis fans. You can be a total homer and still recognize the merits of a different viewpoint.
Although, I do recall an awful lot of folks who though Andruw should have won the MVP a few years ago.
