Barring a last-minute, knockout offer from the Braves, right-hander Tim Hudson plans to become a free agent, according to major-league sources.

Hudson's contract with the Braves includes a $12 million mutual option for 2010. If Hudson declined his end of the deal, he would be free to negotiate with any team.

Other than Angels right-hander John Lackey, the upcoming free-agent class is largely devoid of top-of-the-rotation starters.

Hudson, 34, fits that description when healthy, and he proved that he is recovered from Tommy John surgery by going 2-1 with a 3.61 ERA in seven starts after rejoining the Braves on Sept. 1.

The Braves are likely to exercise their option on Hudson, a decision that must be made within five days of the completion of the World Series.
My initial response is I'm not that surprised. Hudson had a decent showing the last month and should have no problem finding a 1 year $12 million contract. At his age I expect worst case is he gets a one year deal with a player option for the second, which guarantees him some extra money if everything goes bad. From a Braves perspective I'd offer 2 years $25 million with a mutual option year of $13 million for a third. My feeling is Hudson+prospects from Vazquez deal gives the Braves a better chance to compete than just Vazquez. It's a gamble but a necessary gamble.

I think that your plan is a good one as I think that we can't pass up the chance to extract full value from Vazquez. Hudson at that price and years would prolly end up doing very well for us too.

However, if we let Hudson go and keep Vazquez.... we have a lot of money left over for a bat...... so there's that.

Given pitchers salaries today, if the Braves could lock up Hudson for 3 years at $27 mil, that would be an absolute steal. If I'm Frank Wren, I do that deal as quickly as possible before Tim realizes he's being fleeced.

It is said that pitchers who do come back from that surgery are like newborn pups in terms of the health of the arm. I hope Wren doesn't make any assumptions and goes after Hudson hard.

I like Hudson and the results of the latest versions of the TJ surgeries have worked wonderfully, but I have a concern about Hudson. He has a rather slight build, he's past his prime age-wise, and his pitching motion puts a lot of stress on that repaired wing. I wouldn't rush into anything...

If Hudson takes 3 years $25 he's either ridiculously loyal or surgery did something to his head. Hudson gave reason to believe he can be a #2 starting pitcher next season and those kind of pitchers get $10 million minimum, and usually more like $13 million per season.

On the other hand, if you re-sign Hudson and trade Vazquez....you have yourself a bat AND you probably have money left over to fix your bullpen and bench.

I was just pointing out that if Hudson DOES leave, that it's not the end of the world. It isn't the optimum situation( which is Hudson resigned for a little cheaper per year then Vazquez flipped for either a bat or the parts to obtain a bat. then the money used to fix the other stuff) But getting $12 million added to yer x-mas shopping stash isn't the end of the world!

So DOB doesn't think the Braves will pay Tim Hudson $10 million a year? Why the heck wouldn't they? That guy is dumb. Seriously.

If they want Hudson, there's no way $10 million is too much to pay for his services.

Agreed... I think it takes 3 years and $30 million just to get Hudson's attention.
