Carroll Rogers at the AJC reports (http://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-braves/jon-boog-sciambi-leaving-153186.html)...

Braves (http://g.ajc.com/r/Ct/) announcer Jon "Boog" Sciambi is leaving Fox Sports South and Sports South to take a full-time position at ESPN.
...
Sciambi will be calling both Major League Baseball and college basketball games on TV and radio for ESPN, with whom he has worked part-time since 2005.

Man, I'm gonna miss Boog. He makes Joe enjoyable, you know? ;)

(The photo accompanying the article is hilarious. He's like a red-headed Tommy Boy!)

That's a shame. I liked Boog a lot, which is probably why he was wanted by ESPN.

Although, given their current standards for broadcasters, maybe Boog isn't as good as I think.

Sucks.

I hope this doesn't mean that Ron Gant will be replacing him. I won't be able to stand it. He doesn't bring anything to the broadcast. Everything he says and does is completely by the book. I can basically predict everything that he says before he says it. I might stop listening to Braves broadcasts all together. I'll have to watch the game on mute with either music or the radio broadcast playing instead.

I guess it's just a difference in preferences. I lean more toward substance and it seems most of you lean towards flash. I enjoyed Boog, but not to the extent some of you did. On the other hand, I like Joe. He brings experience as a player and a broadcaster. He doesn't need a "just rolled outta bed" hair style to stand out. Perhaps it's just our age differences.....

Freddy, Boog is extremely knowledgeable. He has an appreciation for the more advanced statistics and knows more about the rest of the league than Joe Simpson ever will. He's not just a guy with a funny hair style and a funny sense of humor. He's an all around great broadcaster, which is why Braves fans have loved him and why ESPN wanted him back.

former players tend to be color guys and not play by play men though...we've already got that taken care of with Simpson...def gonna suck to see boog leave he's the closest thing I've seen to the joy we got from having Skip before he started getting sick...

I'm really going to miss Boog too. I hope this doesn't mean we'll see more of Ron Gant and Chip Caray.

Wait...when did Joe Simpson become substance?

I almost cried when I heard the news. Boog and Simpson complimented each other well. Will be interesting to see who they replace him with.

Andy, I never said Boog wasn't knowledgeable. I never denied his expertise with different stats. (More advanced? Knows more about the rest of the league? Your opinions.) I have stated before that I like him and enjoy the job both guys do.
Dream, Joe has always been about the game and he knows it inside and out. To me, that is substance. He and Sutton bring more to broadcasts than stats they've read. Both played at the ML level and legitimately know how it feels and what ballplayers think about and do during games and seasons and can relate that to the audience. I call that substance and it's much more meaningful than listening to a stooge like Tim Brando try and tell us what major leaguers think or do. If you don't care about listening to those insights that's simply your taste. It doesn't alter the info those guys bring to a broadcast.

This is my impression of Joe Simpson.

"He has to take it the other way. He needs to hit the ball the other way. He really should hit the ball the other way. He may have hit that homer further if he hit it the other way. My coaches all stressed for me to hit the ball the other way. Sacrifice bunting should be done the other way."

I kid...and I don't. Joe Simpson has always been a weak link with the Braves announcers in my eyes. He has a bit of a sarcastic take, which I do like, but his value to the broadcasting booth is minimal. I didn't like Sutton, but after listening to Lemke and Sutton's replacement on MASN, I'll give him a pass.

But, no, it's not substance to me to simply have been in the majors. Hell, there are some major dummies in baseball. A few have played in Atlanta over the years.

yeah, being a player doth not a good broadcaster make!

2 words: Joe Morgan

2 more : Tim McCarver

That stinks... Boog and Joe had a great chemistry up there. Boog was one heck of a caller, and I knew it was odd that they had him calling that Sunday night game a while back.

So I guess that means Chip will take his place?

doubt Chip, but someone pointed out another Caray...Josh in the minors...

I heard Josh call most of the G-Braves games that were broadcast in Atlanta, and I think he needs a little more practice before he makes it to the bigs. He's not as smooth as his half-brother, but he's also not as stupid. ;)

This my third attempt at responding...it's pretty obvious our disagreement on Joe is based on age. I learned the same brand of baseball Joe did when I was a kid. It's the style I'm familiar with, it encourages sacrifices, situational hitting, moving runners and doesn't rely so heavily on three run blasts. Also obvious is that you prefer someone better versed in the swing-away approach and it's reliance on sabrmetrics or other micro-stats for your broadcasts because it's the style you are most familiar with.
I never said old players make good broadcasters just because they played. I stated that Don and Joe were able to convey that to the audience, that helps make them enjoyable to me. Joe Morgan speaks about Joe Morgan for Joe Morgan. He sucks. McCarver and even Jon Miller were actually very good a long time ago. McCarver used to be one of the best before he became like so many of today's stiffs, like Brando, who honestly believe we're tuning in to see or hear them, and the game is secondary. McCarver and Miller are bad cross-overs and Miller is particularly bad because he sucks up to Joe MyOrgan. (Third attempt because the posts vanished to some "unable to locate page" BS.)
