Nope, Mac isn't a politician, he's a friend of the site and the owner of BravesJournal.com. A long time ago Mac was part of Bravesbeat, from which many members left to form Chopnation.

Here's news from his site today.
As all of you know, Mac has been in and out of the hospital for a long time. That is not going to change any time soon, although, for the moment, his health is stable.

If you’ve spent any time at all in a hospital — especially one in Philadelphia that has no Wifi, which is where Mac has been — you know that it kind of sucks. Not to mention cancer treatments, pneumonia, and all of the rest. Alex R. has stayed in pretty close touch with Mac by phone, and Mac has said that he really wants an iPad. (The large screen really helps when you’re woozy on meds.) When Alex told him that we wanted to try to raise the money through Bravesjournal, Alex said, “That was the happiest I’ve heard him.”

Alex R. set up this Paypal account for the gift. It’s different from the one on the sidebar to the right — we’re taking care of everything for Mac. I’ll keep posting a link to the Donate button until we’re able to afford an iPad with 3G — we’d like to buy one new, but Apple sells cheaper ones refurbished if need be.

So if enough of us donate $5, $10, or $20, we’ll be able to get him one. Please help. This will make his life easier in a difficult time. Especially with Andrelton Simmons out for a month.

If you haven't read Mac's blog before, it's quite good and I have been a regular reader for at least 5 years. It's hard to keep track after that long. I have donated to the cause and highly encourage others to support Mac as well. Below is the link to the site.

It sounds like things have taken a sad turn. According to a couple of different sources, Mac has been moved to hospice care. Sad day for Braves fans.

From Mac's Twitter yesterday:
Macthomason? Little ole me! I was sick but glory be. Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated

I can't think o a better blogger than Mac. Back when I was writing Braves Bias (in the simple days when I wasn't a Ph.D. student) his work was extremely helpful and great. I think there are a lot of us that learned a lot from his blog not just about the Braves but how to be a great communicator.

How much did Mac mean to his readers? According to Alex Remington the IPad donation effort raised $2800. That's simply amazing. Future baseball writers should study his work, because that's how it's done.

This is horrible news. Braves Journal is how I found Braves Beat many many years ago. Godspeed Mac. You will be missed.
