Not huge news by itself but as the article states it opens up another spot on the 40 man roster. BFH pointed out in another post that the Braves already have 2 spots open so this would make 3. Seems like they are planning something but it's not clear what. Certainly makes a waiver grab or August trade easy to facilitate. It also allows them to bring up Freeman and/or Minor if needed (those two aren't on the 40 man). I believe Freddie has to go on the 40 man at some point this year since this is his 5th yr in the minors. Otherwise he'd be Rule-5 eligible. So I can see Minor and Freeman filling two of those slots because they could help in August and the post season (Freeman more than Minor...but you never know). The third slot was probably opened so they could do a waiver grab if they wanted. The fact that they did this with Resop right when all the teams are sending their players thru revocable waivers makes me think they found someone on the wire who has interested them.
I think a related move to this might be that the Braves will send KK to Gwinett to fill Resops rotation slot if he clears waivers. If he's their starter insurance he needs to be starting. O'Flaherty should be back in a couple of weeks so that would be the logical time to send out KK, but I could see the Braves sending him sooner and bringing up someone like Marek or Martinez for the pen.
Any other ideas on what the plan is for the three opened slots?

O'Flaherty should be back in a couple of weeks
I went early for batting practice last night and sat next to the bullpen, and O'Flaherty was still seriously weak. He may have told the media he's feeling "100% now (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100802&content_id=12936578¬ebook_id=12936598&vkey=notebook_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl)", but it didn't look like there's any way he could have pitched tonight, and he spent the evening in the dugout, not in the bullpen. He could barely chase balls in BP. :( Hope he's feeling better soon.

KK's pitched one inning in the past 5 1/2 weeks...what a waste of $7M. Sure wish we could unload him and most of his salary to another team.
On top of the $7M salary, KK also enjoys the following perks: interpreter (much to the chagrin of Ozzie Guillen), housing, access to massage therapist, 8 round-trip business- or first-class airline tickets between Tokyo and Atlanta.
Heck for all we know, he may have used some of those RT tickets during the past month ... how would we know?

They should have given him a one way ticket. Ba da boom. Chish. I'll be here all week.

I just don't think Freeman is ready for major league pitching. If he was crushing it posting a 1.000 OPS or something I'd say yes, let's bring him up, but while his current production is above average, it's not to the point where I think we can say he doesn't have some things to learn at AAA. Personally, I still think he's probably at least 1 year away from being truly ready to face major league pitching.

No way is he still a year a way. His numbers are misleading, Wahoo. He wasn't quite ready for AAA at the beginning of the season, but the Braves put him there (probably because they knew he'd get it within a matter of months, and also to keep him with his roommate, Heyward).
In April, his OPS was .790. In May it was .667.
In June, his OPS was .922. In July it was .944.
He's obviously an exceptionally talented player. He's only twenty-years old and he's already turned the corner and started crushing AAA pitching. He'll be our firstbaseman next year, and unless he takes a complete nosedive now through the rest of the season, there will be no reason to doubt that he is ready.

If he gets called up next month, and I certainly hope he does, that would help detemine if Mr. Freeman is ready for the big time.

Consider it? I'd think it would be obvious that we have to bring him up. That is unless we can trade him for Adam Dunn...

umm that would be insane! You don't trade 5+ years of a potential all star caliber player for one half year of Dunn!!! No effin way!

Uhh, one guaranteed allstar? Hits 40+ homeruns a year with 100+ RBI?
If you've read the scouting reports on Freeman MANY many scouts are saying he'll be an average first baseman that possibly might have to have a platoon partner because his splits are so high.
I would make that trade in a heart beat, especially given Bobby's last year and the chance we might lock Dunn up for awhile.

True. You don't! It would be insane! It would be 50 times dumber than the trade we made for Tex a few years ago. You don't do that if you're planning for the future.
But.................call me crazy.........but.........
I remember when guys like Salty and Marte were can't miss prospects and almost untouchable....Lastings Milledge was viewed the same way. Well they all missed and Freeman just may miss too.
The Big Donkey is a big presence in a team's line-up ... he can mash and he would help A LOT.
I've been a Braves' fan for 45 seasons and have one World Series title to brag about. We had multiple chances in the 90s and blew it ... We need a big bat in the middle of the line-up and Dunn is about the only guy available. We have almost no chance to win the World Series this year the way the team is currently constructed ...sure we can wait until next year and see how we'll do with Freeman but stuff happens, pitchers go down etc. It's tempting to go for it now.....it would be very stupid .... but sometimes it's better to live for today :headscratch: ....Nahhhhhhhhhhh

Well, just so y'all know Dunn's defense is so bad as to almost mitigate his offensive output.(in other words he costs almost as many runs over an average player as he gains via his bat over an average player).
Glaus is struggling, he's being benched for a while (and I just read the team is not eliminating the possiblity of a waiver deal to move him or a release if he doesn't improve) but he has a history of production and it seems unlikely that his ability to hit for power is gone (more likely his knees or his swing is jacked up). If he comes back and hits, no harm no foul, if he doesn't, well it appears there are contigency plans in the worx if that happens.
Remember, he has a lot of plate appearnce incentives in his contract, so if he keeps hitting like this, they WILL cut him or trade him for a bag of undies....
Freeman...... when is this poor guy gonna get some love, he hits .933 OPS in his last two months in Gwinnett, plays a good 1b and is apparently a good clubhouse guy as well.... but you would trade that for Dunn(who i like don't get me wrong, but not for 2 months) The kid is going to play this year, he will prolly be our opening day starter at 1b next year. He will prolly be our opening day 1b for the next 5+ years... you DO NOT TRADE THAT FOR TWO MONTHS OF ALBERT PUJOLS... Even if it costs you a world series.... you just don't.

Andy Marte, Wilson Betemit, Salty... etc were prospects who couldn't miss. They've missed badly. I'm not saying it's going to happen to Freddie, but I do know that Adam Dunn has proven himself at the MLB level as a TOP player that could get us a WS title.
To me, this is not insane or dumb. Most people know how much I love prospects, but for Dunn I would be more than willing to give up Freeman. I honestly don't even think that would be enough though.
I have Freddie Freeman as one of my minor league fantasy players that I was counting on being an allstar in the majors in a couple years. The higher up the charts prospects go the more scouting reports come out and the more accurate they become. I have not been excited with the recent reports comparing him more to a Lyle Overbay type player.

If the Nats think anyone is giving them more than a B+ grade, easy replacement for a month and a half of Adam Dunn, they are, indeed, crazy. Not that he will pass through waivers, but I see no reason to trade away Freeman for Dunn at this point.

Dunn will never make it through waivers. Any team would only be obligated to pay the remainder of his contract, which they would have to do in a trade anyway. But they wouldn't have to give up the prospects to get him.
The only reason good players typically make it through waivers is due to a prohibitive contract situation. Since Dunn doesn't have that, he'll get claimed by a bunch of teams.
So...we're not getting Dunn.

Back to the actual subject of this thread, CHRIS RESOP, here's some breaking news from Mark Bowman on Twitter:
I feel like the Braves definitely struck out on Resop. At one time we should have been able to get at least a B prospect for one of the best starters in AAA.
The guy was pitching like a future ace starter. When he got up he got one try... ridiculous. We've been doing pretty well for the last month with 23 people on our team. Resop and KK could have just slept in the clubhouse much like Griffey was doing over here.

Doubtful. Resop was a project that others may have wanted a shot at, but they knew the Braves had to choose to bring him up or he would hit the open market and with his quick injury, any trade value he may have had was shot.
Regardless, I'm truthfully not that worried.

The problem with Dunn on waivers is likely one of our rich competitors will pick him up. We are the last team to be a claimer, aside from SF and San Diego, I think. What if he goes to the Phils to back up the injured Howard and provide some depth with all the injuries they've had?
Scares me.
Also, as far as Dunn generally, if we could sign him to a two or three year deal as part of the waiver claim, I'd take him even if it cost us Freeman. He's about 40/100 every year, and that just doesn't grow on trees and very rarely does it grow in the minors.... He can work on his 1b defense next spring....
While he helps Mac polish the 2010 World Series trophy.
