Never heard about this kid, but he absolutely lit up AA and got promoted to AAA when Julio was promoted to AA.
"Brandon Beachy is going from Mississippi up to Triple-A Gwinnett. Beachy has been the breakout pitcher in the Atlanta organization this season.
The 23-year-old right-hander was 3-1 in AA with a 1.47 ERA in 27 games. He allowed 53 hits in 73.2 innings, with 22 walks and 100 strikeouts.
But it’s the work Beachy has done as a starter since mid-June that has caught the attention of the Braves and scouts around the game. Beachy is 2-0 in six starts, with a 1.54 ERA. He’s allowed 21 hits in 35 innings, with eight walks and 51 strikeouts.
Baseball America’s Jim Callis was recently asked about Beachy’s ceiling and tweeted, “Best case scenario is number two starting pitcher, more realistic is number three starting pitcher (in the big leagues).”"

I got to see Brandon play in HS...our schools were in the same sectional. Great baseball player from one of the best small school baseball programs our state has. Played 3 years at Indiana Wesleyan mostly at 3B. He did pitch a little in relief. Summer of his junior year, IWU wanted him to work on his pitching. That's where he caught the Braves attention and the rest is better documented lol. He's always had a hose, just never focused on pitching which he's obviously getting the opportunity to do now. I am surprised that he's been able to have this much success going from reliever to starter. I think that's a big change.

I follow the minors pretty closely. I just couldn't believe nothing is being said about this kid who has #2 potential and is in AAA already. Baseball America has nothing on him. He literally came out of nowhere.

Well, he just made the switch to starter. If he had been starting his entire career, there would be more talk about him. This is like a Kris Medlen situation.

Not surprised not much has been written about him. Undrafted out of college, there was nothing about him that stood out until this season and until his success is sustainable, I wouldn't say he has #2 potential. For instance, Beachy's 6.5 H/9 will rise at Gwinnett. If the K's stay high and the walks stay down, that won't matter too much. But I do wonder how he will do against some older hitters. But his rise from complete obscurity has been impressive.

Beachy had another strong start yesterday in AAA. He went seven innings, gave up two runs, three hits, one walk and struck out four.
So far in AAA: 17 IP, 6 ER, 13 H, 3 BB and 16 SO.
He could be really close to the big leagues. Hopefully he finishes strong and keeps it going at the start of next year. It would be a great luxury to have yet another solid starter knocking on the door in 2011.

I would love to see him competing for a spot next on the big club but I think he probably at least starts the year at Gwinnett. The Braves might have him there the whole year and call him up in Sept next year. Although you'd know better than me if the Braves are that aggressive in bringing guys up. For some reason I thought they were a little more conservative with that.

Yeah he'll definitely start the year in AAA. When I said "knocking on the door in 2011" I meant he could be ready for a promotion by mid-season. Of course, he could struggle badly in AAA next year too.
If he does continue pitching this well for the first two or three months next season, he will be a pretty valuable trade piece.

I don't have the opportunity to look it up right at this moment...but his relative rise from no where with respectable K/9 and BB/9 with an excellent K/BB reminds me of another guy we had a while back.
Jamie Richmond. Perhaps not ironically, traded along with Joey Devine for Mark Kotsay and $5.5M or something of that sort as the money goes.
Beachy sure is intriguing, but I wonder if his rise from no where makes him a candidate to fill out the back end of a trade this winter just as Richmond did before him.

Baseball America just posted this about him on today's blog:
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=10187
The ERA title is Gwinnett's Brandon Beachy's to lose. Beachy allowed one run in six innings on Sunday against Norfolk to lower his ERA to 1.83. He leads Akron's Matt Packer (2.08) by a substantial margin. If Packer does close the margin he would be adding another ERA title to his resume–he led Division I in ERA in 2008 with a 1.14 ERA at Virginia.
