No details on the finances yet. As long as they are reasonable, I think this is fantastic news.

Rosenthal says the deal is worth more than $3 million but doesn't give any specific figures. Provided the value remains below $4 million that's a nice signing. Ross gives the Braves a really good backup who can perform when McCann needs days off. Alternatives to spending a couple million on someone like Ross include the likes of Corky Miller, Pratt, Blanco, and Bako. I'll take Ross over any of them for a little extra money no questions asked.

When Ross is in there it no longer feels like you giving up an automatic out just to give McCann a break. He's a solid defender and no slouch with the bat (relatively speaking). I like the signing.

I would guess Ross' agent is NOT Scott Boras....

Financial details:
ajcbraves (http://twitter.com/ajcbraves/status/19683699266) Ross' deal is for two years $3.25 million. $1.625m in 2011 and $1.625m in 2012
Really excellent signing. I'm pretty surprised. I figured Ross would definitely be headed for a place where he'd get lots more at bats and $ next year. He would have been a hot commodity with Boston and both NY teams this winter. There are actually a slew of teams who would gain alot with Ross in a 50/50 split time situation. He's a very good catcher with a cannon arm that halts running games. He can hit a little too. Did you know that in his games behind the plate for the Braves basestealers have only successfully stolen 29 bases and been caught 26 times! McCann's caught stealing % has been on the upswing ever since Ross arrived as well. Wonder if he helped BMac?
It's an under the radar signing that provides the Braves solid backup insurance for McCann. Great move Wren. With Ross locked up, I'd love to see the Braves work McCann into playing some games at 1b once or twice a week. This way they can give him plenty of days off from catching but still keep his bat in the lineup.

Rossy loves it here, though. He's from south GA, went to Auburn, and I'd bet he likes coaching the young guys. Mac has said he's been an invaluable resource. If he wasn't happy with his playing time, he wouldn't have re-signed.

"McCann credits Ross with helping him improve his own throwing."

I've been thinking for a while now that he'll make a good pitching coach or even a manager after his playing career is over. I can't remember who was pitching the other day, maybe Jurrjens, but the camera caught a moment where McDowell walked to the other end of the dugout and conferred with Ross about something. The announcers speculated that Roger was asking Ross if he noticed anything different about JJs delivery or release point. And Ross wasn't even playing that day...just sitting in the dugout doing a little coaching. I love to see that from players.

Do you think they could signing Ross now as a prelude to trading him? I hope not, but it could be. The Braves historically haven't done deals like this mid-year and he is much more tradeable as a known quantity for 2 years.

Personally, I like the idea of Ross moving into an Ausmus-like 75% backup, 20% starter, 5% coach role. It bodes well for his future.
Very happy with this move. Ross can really play.
