You will be in my thoughts BFH and I hope you and yours will be ok and that wish goes out to all residing there. When I first heard what was going on in Chile and the coming Tsunami the first thing that occured to was that Mother Earth is exacting her revenge for all that was done to her over such a long time. And I am not a religious believer as you probably know already.

First and foremost, my prayers go out to the people of Chile. I guess it could've been worse all over the world and I'm just happy places like Hawaii were spared.
Mother Earth has always exacted her revenge on mankind so if you're trying to blame things like global warming or pollution for recent earthquakes, I say nice try but I don't buy it. Back in 1556, an earthquate killed approximately 830,000 people in China and I doubt there were a lot of carbon emissions back then. I'm no scientist but I do know that the sun, its solar storms and other factors have a great impact on what happens down here on earth. Not saying we should ignore the enviroment but to infer that recent earthquakes are a result of long-term environmental abuse isn't something you can prove...just sounds like you and other liberals are trying to use these unfortunate events to blame mankind when IMO, it was an Act of God that no one can fully explain.

No matter what your opinions on global warming, you'd be hard-pressed to draw any link between global warming and earthquakes. I can't see how anybody could claim that the relatively recent warming trends have had any impact on the plate tectonics that cause earthquakes.

Amazing because I never mentioned global warming at all and the truth is it never occured to me when I wrote what I did. It seems the right wingers here are just looking for a fight.

It's true that you didn't mention global warming but now I'm curious what you were thinking when you wrote "Mother Earth is exacting her revenge for all that was done to her over such a long time."

Here's a thread to continue the politically-tinged conversation begun elsewhere...

luvdem, I really don't know but it might have to do with the fact that my apartment is decorated in a fashion dedicated to the Indians who were the victims of an attempted genocide. Their definition of Mother Earth is something I always admired to an extent. That the earth is akin to a living breathing being that should be treated with respect by its children who are the humanity that has strolled upon it from the beginning of time.

I don't know if I would be that hard-pressed to draw a link, but maybe you are talking about showing causation.
The primary driving mechanism of climate change is arguably astronomical. The same could also apply to earthquakes since gravitational forces acting on the earth can be the tipping point in shifts in the Earth's crust. The earth's tectonic plates are literally floating on a molten core. The Earth is literally several layers of fluid and all are subject to gravitational tidal forces.
Astro-meteorology is an incredible field ripe for some 'actual' scientific research that could unlock a lot of simply misunderstood events that happen on Earth. There is a good physical explanation for why a lot of things happen.
This is definitely not to say it's not an act of God. Rather, I believe any good omnipotent God sees this stuff way far out in advance. The calculations and predictability are mind-boggling when one sees a much grander view of our picture in the galaxy.

Yes, I meant a causal link.

I always figured you as a wolf person
Tectonic plate movement (and the resulting earthquakes) happen many miles below the surface of the earth(and far away from the effects of any sort of climate shift) There is absolutely no relation betwixt the two. As already stated the earths crust floats on a molten mantle and is broken up into several different plates ( and they are all named and monitored) however, we havn't been able to "crack" the code of how to predict earthquakes based on this monitoring yet. It's an extremely large and complex system operating uner temperatures and pressures that make a 3 degree climate change look like a an ant on the moon.

Bother me? Not in the least bit.
I just have a difficult time following your logic. First, you state the recent earthquake is Mother Nature's way of exacting revenge for all that was done to her over a long time. I wrongly assumed you were referring to climate change but you replied that wasn't what you were thinking at all ... it had more to do with how your apartment was decorated in tribute to the native American Indian. Huh? :headscratch:
Genocide of native American indians was a big topic during the 60's hippie movement so perhaps you were just having some sort of flashback.

Or... there are numerous other ways that we could be aiding or even triggering earthquakes. Oil drilling and attempts to exploit geothermal energy have been linked with [sometimes] causing tremors or small earthquakes.
Just tossing it out there.

luvdem, if I am reading you right then you should be ashamed of what you wrote. The genocide of the Indians was just a topic of the hippies movement in the 60's? Are you denying the genocide or can you tell me a justification for doing that to a people who would have given you the land and all you had to do was ask for it? I recommend you read the best book on the subject called "The Earth Shall Weep" which is a carefully researched work describing in detail what was done. Do you know how many Indians were killed during all this? Most people have no idea but the number is around 20 million.

I'm in atlanta fulton county stadium
I see him off in the distance....upper section
I climb bleachers. Higher and higher and higher.
With each step I take, my excitement grows more and more, because of the anticipation.
I said to him, "Can you give me some free tickets to tomorrow nights game?" And I will never forget what chief knockahoma said to me, "Me no give um tickets."
I just can't see him ever giving away any land if he was this selfish about tickets.

I'll look into that.
It's just the indigenous tribes of the Pacific Northwest really weren't that friendly toward one another. They had boundaries. They had planned skirmishes every year. One tribe understood that another tribe was coming to get fish and meat from the streams and hunting grounds, and every year they would meet them there for a ritualistic battle that led to many deaths... and after the battles ended, they would allow the tribe to get some fish.
I just took notice to the fact that you said these people would give away their land. We were a totally foreign concept to them. They didn't think they owned the land... or any land. They just knew what they needed to survive and would do what they had to in order to live. They believe the land will sustain them. They saw us as a threat to their survival.
Give land? The land doesn't belong to anyone. The land is its own thing...
