Today, I caught the final regular season game of the season for the local Lynchburg Hillcats. They were facing the Salem Red Sox, who needed to win the game to sneak into the playoffs (the Hillcats were already there because they won the first half). Long story short, Salem won it.
As I was going through the roster for Salem, I saw the name "Jose Capellan" and thought wow, that's where that guy has gone to die?
Actually, he's a different Jose Capellan. The other Jose Capellan is also in the minors, but I guess it's not as awful to be struggling at AAA than it is to be horrible in the majors after Capellan was once a top minor league prospect. He's been roughed up this year with Round Rock (Astros), going 2-10 with a 7.07 ERA.
Any other former prospects you guys want to talk about?

Wilson Betemit hit two solo home runs as a Charlotte Knight (AAA White Sox) yesterday against our Gwinnett Braves. Has he been injured? Why is he back in the minors?

David Nied changed the oil in my car at Jiffy Lube the other day.

Well, last I heard he was an oil change assistant, so it's good to see he got promoted to oil change technician. Good for him.

Andy Marte has a .288 OBP in 101 AB for the Indians this season. In other news Jurrjens has been amazing for the Braves and that Vazquez guy is a pretty good pitcher as well.

I think it's either because of his .591 OPS this year (in limited action), or because of his enormous man-area.

From today's Baseball Prospectus Minor League Update...
Anthony Lerew, RHP, Roylals (Double-A Northwest Arkansas)
Thursday's stats: 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Once a hot prospect with the Braves, Lerew's lack of overpowering velocity caught up with him at the upper levels, and then Tommy John surgery all but removed him from the prospect radar. Now two months short of 27 and pitching in Double-A, he's little more than an organizational soldier, but you have to give him credit for Wednesday night's performance. Not only did he shutout Springfield, he did it on just 73 pitches in one of the most efficient performances you'll ever see, as he averaged 8.1 pitches per inning and 2.5 per batter.

Marte looks like he might have finally made sense of things and is turning it around. He looked pretty good at 1b this year for the Indians and might be good trade bait for them soon.

Anyone know where Terrell "Hiawatha" Wade might be these days?

According to Wikipedia, which is free and available to everyone including you Michael, he retired about five years ago from professional baseball. Beyond that, you'd probably have to hire a private detective or seek out one of his relatives.

The White Sox just released Wilson Betemit, at one time one of the best prospects in baseball, and who was supposed to be Chipper's replacement.
I think we should sign him to a minor league contract. We have nobody in the minors with upside at the 3b position (or any infield position other than Freeman at first). Can't hurt nobody.

If we signed Wilson Betemit, we'd still have nobody with upside at the third base position.

I would still sign Betemit because he needs to lose a little weight and refocus because he can still hit.

Then again, the guy I think I would go after is Andy Marte who might have finally hit his stride.

Didn't we used to say that about Andruw?

If these guys can be had on a minor league contract, then I would totally take a flyer on both of them just because of the potential for extended depth for the major league team. It never hurts to have some extra depth.

Normally, those would be good reasons not to sign someone.

You may be right because I never said I was excited about bringing guys back because one thing we shouldn't dismiss; they were sent away for a reason. BTW, Lauren, signing Andruw also occured to me and I pray we don't become that desperate.

I would love to have Andy Marte back, but he's not a FA anymore is he? I put him on my fantasy team at the end of the year because he started heating up at the end.
Wilson Betemit just signed a minor league deal with the Royals.
I am hoping Andruw Jones either retires or hires 20 personal trainers to work him 24/7. After 6 months of that then we can sign him to a minor league deal.

I think we need to keep Andruw as far from the team as possible.
