View Full Version : My Musical Flavor of the Week Is...

For anybody who is new, this is a thread we had on the old boards. It's easy enough to understand. Just let us know what you're listening to. What's your flavor of the week? Right now, mine is Manchester Orchestra's second album, Mean Everything to Nothing, which you can see below. I've been listening to them for a couple of years. I liked their first album, but this one is much better. They're an Atlanta band, and they're about my age. I didn't realize until recently that they've gotten a good amount of attention. A friend of mine told me to listen to their first album and I'd never heard them mentioned again until recently. I'm way late on listening to this album. There are things I like and dislike about them, but they're a band to watch in the future.

It's not uncommon for me to stay up that late. My work hours are varied so my sleep schedule is pretty random. I'll get some consistency in a few weeks when school starts.

Well, if you've only listened to "Sex On Fire" and "Use Somebody", I can understand not getting what all the hype is about. It seems like a lot of people think they're a new band or that they just recently reached the level of success they're at. In the US they've never been as popular as they are now, but all four of their albums were hits in the UK, and they gained a little more popularity over here with each one. I admit I'm a bandwagon fan like most people who keep cramming "Use Somebody" down everybody's throats. I never listened to them before Only By The Night. When I first listened to it, I didn't really like or dislike it. Then I listened to their other albums, and I got a better understanding of why they're so respected by other great musicians and why critics love them so much. I think they lost the hipsters a long time ago though. It's hard to tell who they like. They change their minds so frequently.

Anyway, I don't know how much of their music you've listened to exactly, but try listening to some of their old stuff. If you never have, you might not know what you're in for. There's been a definite progression in their music to what they're doing now, and I would bet that you like their earlier stuff a lot more than "Use Somebody" and "Sex On Fire". If you haven't already, at least listen to some of the better tracks off their newest album like "Crawl", which happens to be the song used by Tommy Hanson for when he comes to the plate. My favorite album of theirs is Aha Shake Heartbreak.

Yeah , Gilley hit the nail on the head. The new album is good and all ( and probably their most complete album) but their old stuff is great too ( and kinda leaned more towards being an alt country band ) I just like their song variety and that they don't churn out album after album of the same stuff ( tho that has worked for ac/dc and I like them too!)

The album only helps to cement there place as one of my favorite bands...

I was watching TV the other night and a band came on and they were in the midst of a concert. I heard a couple of cuts and really liked them a lot. I stayed on for a long time in the hope there would be some indication of who they were. Nothing came so I looked at the listings on the TV and it was a concert with numerous bands and artists but the only one listed was Fall Out Boy. This puzzled me because I am not into them and knew enough to know their lead guy was (I am pretty sure) Pete Wenz and the band I am looking for is not them.

So the band I am looking for is a four or five man band with the lead singer striking me as looking like a younger version of George W but with blond hair. He is the lead singer and the sound is somewhat like softer rock or like the Goo Goos. If any of you have a clue who this might be please let me know and I will Google their name to see if you are right. Thanks.

Andy G.
11-04-2009, 01:14 AM
Hey Rap, that dude, Pete whatever, isn't actually the front man for Fall Out Boy. The front man is a chubby fellow who squeaks and mumbles so that you can't actually understand any of the awful lyrics Pete whatever writes for him. Maybe it was Fall Out Boy. If you're sure it's not, I'm don't think I can help but if you could give some more details about the style of music they make and maybe what channel they were on I might be able to figure it out.

My flavor of the week is The Killers, and while that's usually the case because I am rightly obsessed with their music, I have added reason to listen to them at the moment. Their first live dvd is coming out in like a week, and on Thursday the featured concert will be premiered world wide for one night only in theaters. I will be attending the show at the nearest theater to my house that is showing it, which is about thirty minutes away. I'm pretty excited about it.

The Rob Thomas concert on Halloween was great. Not only was he amazing, but his opening act, Carolina Liar, was very good as well.

Rob opened the show dressed as Michael Jackson and he and his band performed Thriller before beginning his normal set. It was a fun atmosphere with all of the bands in costumes and the stage decorated for Halloween. My mom, fiance, and I all had a great time and can't wait to see him again.

I turned back the clock and blasted some prime Ted Nugent on my ride home from work. Nuge was rock in the mid-to-late 70s! Dude raised Hell on stage....didn't need light shows, wah-wah pedals or synthesizers. He just rocked!

I just read that and don't believe it is true. Not only because Steven is the voice but because the band has been together for about 4 decades. I met Steven about 20 years ago on Newbury Street right outside of Tower Records when I lived in Boston. The guy is the same on and off the stage and was wearing a t-shirt with a great pic of a bare breasted girl on it but it seemed he was as henpecked as any guy as his wife kept whining his name to come take the baby so they could get in their car and go.

BTW, it was LIFEHOUSE I was looking for as I got two of their CDs and have been listening to them non-stop since.

Have you ever tried pandora.com? It's a cool site. You create a station based on a particular band or even a particular song and they'll play songs that sound like the band/song you created the station for. You might be able to find exactly what you're looking for there. I don't know exactly what kind of music any of the bands you named make, but have you listened to Silversun Pickups? They're an alternative rock band you might like, if you haven't already listened to them. You might also want to check out the band I started this thread with, Manchester Orchestra. They're pretty solid. You've probably heard Cage the Elephant's "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" or "Back Against the Wall". They're a good young band who has opened for both Silversun Pickups and Manchester Orchestra.

Right now I'm listening to The Notwist's album, The Devil You and Me. I hadn't heard it in a while. I forgot how much I like it. Here's what the album art looks like.

Yeah, I've used Pandora but not recently. I used to always go there and explore but they always recommended older music.
A friend recommended Silversun Pickups to me so I bought the album. It did remind me of Smashing Pumpkins and although I grew up liking them it was a little to melon collie (pun intended) for me. It actually made me think about why I always search for a lot of the similar music to what I grew up on. I bought a book called Your Brain on Music and it made me feel closed minded about my musical choices so I've been trying to branch out. I tend to always go for stuff with a lot of detailed soundscaping with a good rock rhythm. When I say detailed it rules out most of the genre that the music industry shoves down our throats like Nickleback and the like. The industry makes finding appealing music hard to find.
Maybe I'll check out Manchester Orchestra. ...thanks

I have a new hot pink Nano, and I would like some song suggestions for my iTunes gift cards. It's been a while since I downloaded any music, but the last 3 songs I downloaded are Estelle & Kanye West's "American Boy", T-Pain & Chris Brown's "Freeze", and Timbaland's "The Way I Are" (radio edit). Please no rock or hard rap suggestions - I like radio edit hip hop and poppy R&B - and I'm just looking for individual songs, not entire albums.

I've mentioned it before, but I'm a radio person, so I've not been living in a hole for the last few years or anything. Music just isn't a priority in my life. Current artists I like are T-Pain, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, T.I., Drake, Usher, Jay Sean, Black Eyed Peas, those sort of artists. I'm up to my ears with old-school stuff -- just trying to remember what I've heard since the mega-migraine that I like and want to hang on to. :) Thanks!

If you've been listening to the radio, I'm sure you've heard B.o.B. But in case you haven't, he's pretty great, and he's from Atlanta (big surprise right lol).

Like I said, you most likely have heard them, but the songs "Nothing on You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PTDv_szmL0&feature=channel) and "Airplanes" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn6-c223DUU) are good. "Lovelier Than You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaUjl0lVX2Y) is pretty great too. I'm sure you'll love it if you haven't heard it already. Another good one from his new album is "Magic" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TrJOGhRRwM).

I just linked to this song in another thread. I don't know that you'll like it, it's kinda underground and all. It's by Theophilus London and it's called "Humdrum Town" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gypiIfMJYro). It's my favorite rap song right now.

Big Boi's song "Shutterbug" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWsvkW6rKkQ) is pretty cool.

Sorry if you're already aware of these songs. I'm not really a huge rap fan, but I do like some, so I usually hear of these songs after they've already been out a while.

Everyone has different tastes. I have never listened to metal, never owned a hard rock song or album. I'll bet half of you have never owned a Norah Jones song but I have all her CDs and I like them. I also like T-Pain, and I like Motown and Sinatra and Disco and Rihanna and Brahms. There's more to music than rock and roll. *shrug*

what kind of decent human being listens to crap like that? seriously.... get out of your cornball neo hiphop shell of doo doo.........

I'll take this as more of an attack on my musical tastes as opposed to whether I'm a "decent human being". If I can quote him, I will say this..."Until you've walked a mile in my shoes, lived a day in my life, then you can't mother effing judge me partna." Basically you don't know nothing bout me and never will and have no idea why I like who I like. So quit tellin me what I should or shouldn't listen to.

Is that in honor of his wedding to Tiny today? :)

I didn't know he was getting married today...congrats to him. No he's hands down my favorite artist so I'm listening to him a lot of the time.

Yeah, she's the total package for sure. I like that she doesn't say or do anything stupid in public, allowing the paparazzi to take pictures of her and whatnot. She's easy to like, she's gorgeous, and she's a great musician. In fact, now that we're talking about her, I'll probably be listening to her latest album for the next few days.

Hey Lauren, I don't want to make any assumptions, but if you like female singer-songwriter types, you might like Marit Larsen's music. She's one of my favorite artists. Her most successful song, which is also my favorite of hers, is "If a Song Could Get Me You". I linked to a couple of her other songs as well. Just thinking that maybe you'd like them.

"If a Song Could Get Me You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qje3U2eRuQ0&feature=avmsc2)

This is the result of having a dad that played in country bands around the Midwest for many years. If anyone has DirecTV, just turn on channel 808 and minus about 10-15% of the songs, you'll have my taste of music down pretty good.

Is it okay to list a bit of music we're delighted we'll soon be rid of here? If I never hear that "This Town," rubbish they feel compelled to play before every game I get to see on tv, I will be thrilled. If they feel they just have to blast this stuff, can't they at least select a new song every 8-10 games or so? It wouldn't bother me if they did away with the mandatory Braves music, and sent Fred Hickman and Brian Jordan out with it!

Not sure yet, a step beyond the past stuff

I have been listening to this for the past few days. It is different than past efforts and if you read the liner notes you can see why. They were not attempting to make an album inssomuch as experimenting by letting their minds and talents to just let go freefall. Still, it resulted in a fantastic CD not comparable to their past efforts but great in absolute terms.

I wonder where you got that CD cover from because the one I have is purely black and white and gives off a dark aura of pending gloom.

I've been enjoying "Wake Up" from John Legend & The Roots for a couple days. Legend's voice is like copper. Amazing. I never really checked out any of his stuff before but I've been a long time die hard Roots fan. I'm going to check out Legend's older work. Anybody here a fan of him? Which album should I start with?

My first wife and I were invited to Jimmy Carter's inauguration. We wewre at one of the balls and found ourselves at a table sitting next to Cher and Greg Allman who were married at the time. Greg was so stoned that he went headfirst into the salad. Cher didnlt look too happy.

I saw the Allman Brothers NYC debut at the Fillmore East. Afterwards I was asked by someone what I thought of the band. I remember saying, "Not bad at all but the lead guitarist is beyond belief." My first exposure to Duane Allman.

Incredible musicians with great haunting vocals by Greg and interesting that Duane's most memorable guitar gig was when he was the key guiitarist on Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominos "Layla."

I think I mislabeled it with the word memorable because so many had no idea it was Duane playing especially with Eric in the band. The body of work for the ABB is awesome and the musicianship of all of them meshed together was truly a creation of raw strength and precious beauty.

If anyone is interested and on Facebook, look up the band "Humanoids from the Deep (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Humanoids-from-the-Deep/110470802316186?ref=ts)". This is the project I'm currently working on, playing bass. It's a horror punk band, and some of the lyrics aren't safe for sensitive ears, but it's a fun little tongue-firmly-in-cheek project. We have a five song EP you can take a listen to on the page.

Nice set up, man. I play a raggedy Squier P-Bass through a Danelectro Daddy-O Overdrive pedal, running to a Fender BXR 200 Bass Amp. I like your rig, though. If my combo ever dies, I'm probably going to look at doing some research and picking a nice bass head....although I've played through this combo amp problem free for over a decade, so who knows?

David is David. An alltime great and icon of the rock world. Interesting how understandable it is that he and Roger Waters can't be in the same band? Similar to the explanation I used to give about Beatles. How do you have, not two, but 3 geniuses confined within one group?

Nah, I meant Ringo.

There are two trains of thought; a) Ringo was so lucky to hook up with the other 3 as if he had a free ride. and b) Ringo's drumming vastly improved the overall sound of the group on the whole which I think is about right. Drummers I have met have always had a lot of respect for Ringo's work.

What is interesting though is how he got the job. The original drummer was Pete Best but Paul wanted him out of the band because Paul wanted to be the only "cute" one in the group.

Best tried to get his revenge a few years later when he put out an album called "Best of the Beatles." The Fab Four sued him into oblivion.

a) new Kings of Leon album excellent and might be the best yet.

b) Brandon Flowers solo album it's like getting a new "Killers CD"

c) Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" one of the truly great groups in rock history

d) Sarah McLachlan's "Laws of Illusion" I told my daughter I wonder if Sarah is human or an angel?

e) Mickey Newbury "Winter Winds" I bought this especially for "Heaven Help the Child" one of my favorites from the 60's and it still touches me big time.

f) Linkin Park "A Thousand Suns" Great CD firmly esconcing them as one of the greatest bands ever

g)Carlos Santana "Guitar Heaven" Excellent rehash of many cover songs utilizing establisehd stars of this generatioin (like Carlos did beore on "Supernatural

h) Neil Young "Le Noise" I love Neil and can listen to him for hours but was disappointed with this CD. Only 8 songs and not very memorable leaving the impression it was done for money and not art.

True the KoL Cd sounds a bit more commercial than before but that is the norm in today's age anyway. My feeling on Linkin Park are obviously personal but I am a big believer that music is a personal thing anyway and probably the most personal you can get.Right now I am listening to Cee Lo's greatest hits.

Interesting tidbit that happened about an hour ago. I am friendly with Al Kooper. For those who don't know who he is consider this;

1. Founder and leader of the original Blood Sweat and Tears band,
2. Same for the Blues Project.
3. One of the 3 giants on Super Sessions (Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills the others.
4. Played on numerous albums of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan.
5. Discoverer of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd Band and the direction they had.

I told him I had a pic of him with Dylan hanging in my apartment taken in about 1965. I asked him if he knew back then how spoecial Dylan was going to be now 4 and a half decades later. He wrote back a simple, "of course."
