Glavine says he won't pitch in '09 (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9705312/Glavine-says-he-won't-pitch-in-'09)
ATLANTA (AP) - Tom Glavine said Friday he plans to "hang out" for the rest of the summer but is not announcing his retirement.

The Atlanta Braves released the 43-year-old Glavine on June 3 after finishing rehabilitation from offseason surgery on his left elbow and shoulder.

Glavine sent a text message to The Associated Press on Friday saying he won't pitch this year. He says he will "evaluate things at the end of the season."

The two-time Cy Young winner's career record of 305-203 includes five 20-win seasons. He was the winning pitcher in the Braves' clinching victory over Cleveland in the 1995 World Series.

Glavine told MLB.com he will not follow through with plans to file a grievance against the Braves. He has said he believes he was released for financial reasons.

The Braves said Glavine was released because all the team's reports from his minor league rehab showed he could not succeed in the major leagues.

I found this interesting:

"National league hitters today were very saddened to hear of the possibility that Glavine won't be pitching this year. Upon hearing the news, many players called their agents in an attempt to restructure their contracts, prior to a drop off in offensive performance."

I guess he had too many qualified suitors and he just couldn't decide on which championship caliber team to join.

The Braves played this wrong, but Glavine missed out on one hell of a party of appreciation when he refused to retire.

Glavine and Smoltz would make a great HOF class. Just something for both of them to think about a bit.

I am reminded of a quote from Jim Bouton's book Ball Four. He concluded by talking about how much to hang on towards the end of the career and how many players hang on even when it seems they are done.

The line I liked was, "you spend you life holding on to a baseball and it turns out it was the other way around all along."

I love that quote, Scooter.

In the most recent revised version of that book, there is another quote that he added that I love:

"You spend your life holding on to a baseball, and it turns out that you don't want to let it go, because the money, fame and fan adoration is f*cking intoxicating."

My first thought upon hearing this story yesterday was, "No one picked him up. Sad; not surprising." Second thought was, "Note to self: Don't burn bridges." Third though was...since it looks like Smoltz is going to pitch this year, I wondered if Glav is waiting. Of course, he'll never SAY he's waiting... but maybe he's waiting so they can go in together. Who knows.

LOL! I must have missed that version!

I liked Bouton's book but have never forgiven him for creating Big League Chew. I HATE bubble gum!

Also, Bob Feller will not pitch in 2009.

Well, except for the Hall of Fame legends game.
