Last night, Cliff Lee had a performance of which only one pitcher has matched since pitch counts have been recorded (circa 1950). With a full 9 IP, having at least 12 K's, and less than 100 pitches, only Sandy Koufax's no-hitter on June 4, 1964 is able to match that. Baseball-Reference's Play Index is a wonderful thing, even if it shows how good a Phillie was.

Interesting because as good as Lee is he doesn't come close to Koufax. In fact when Greg Maddox was in his height of performances years I read a comparison of Greg versus Koufax using his protracted career. I was shocked when they gave the nod to Maddux although it made me feel awesome.

Maddux's biggest attribute (aside from his 5 ungodly dominant years) was the fact that he was Just "great" for another 12 years. At the tail end of his career he sunk to merely average... Not to mention he wasn't blessed with a 95 mph heater and it's truly amazing what he accomplished. Heck if he had played during the 4 man rotation I bet he would've had 400 wins.

Nick, it isn't an attribuite but an achievement

Well pardon the hell out of me for my linguistical malfeasance! ;-)
